Galicia suffered numerous Viking raids during the Middle Ages. When those raids became frequent, Galicians created defensive systems to avoid large-scale pillage. In Galician history there is ample documental evidence on various battles against the Viking hordes. One of the most famous Galician victories is still commemorated yearly in a town known as Catoira.
